Reasons to Learn about AI in High School from a British International School of Kuala Lumpur Student
Have you ever wondered about why high schoolers should learn about AI? Or been curious about how AI will apply to the future? In this article, we discuss the importance of learning about AI in high school, and how it may affect them in the future.
Some questions that high schoolers might have include:
What is AI?
Why is it important to learn AI?
How is AI going to help people in the future?
What is AI?
We shall start off with the simplest thing to know, “What is AI?” AI is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines.
AI requires a foundation of specialized hardware and software for writing code and training machine learning algorithms. Some popular AI languages include Python, Java and Scratch. Overall, AI systems work by ingesting large amounts of labelled training data, analyzing the data for correlations and patterns, and using these patterns to make predictions about future outcomes.
Examples of AI:
Siri, Alexa, Robot workers, recommendations, spam filters and self-driving cars.
Why is it important to learn about AI?
It is important to learn about AI in high school because it has human capabilities such as communication, understanding, and reason. General analytical tasks, such as finding patterns in data, have been performed by software for many years and can now also be performed more effectively by AI. Significant and mind-blowing new products, services and capabilities have been introduced because of AI including self-driving cars, automated medical diagnosis, and voice input for human-gadget interactions. AI has numerous, tangible use cases today that are increasing corporate revenue growth and cost savings.
By all counts and proven results, it is important to learn about AI because it can help businesses and companies save money.
How is AI going to help people in the future?
Cybersecurity:
There were so many cybersecurity breaches today. For example, in 2013, there was an attack on Yahoo which impacted 3 billion users as their account data had been hacked by a hackers group. In 2021, there was an attack on LinkedIn which affected 700 million users and in 2019 there was an attack on Facebook which affected 533 million users. Companies are struggling to stay one step ahead of hackers. Experts say the self-learning and automation capabilities enabled by AI can protect data more affordably, keeping people safer from hackers. AI-based tools look for patterns associated with malicious computer viruses and programs before they can steal massive amounts of information or cause massive havoc.
Transportation:
The place where AI may have the biggest impact in the near future is self-driving cars. Unlike humans, AI drivers never look down at their phones to see who’s calling them, put on make-up or argue with their kids in the backseat. Thanks to Tesla, autonomous cars are already here as they have cameras around the car to detect motion. Driverless trains already rule the rails in European cities, and in the aerospace industry, Boeing is building an autonomous jetliner.
Crucial Tasks:
AI assistants will help older people stay independent and live in their own homes longer. AI tools will keep healthy food available, safely reach objects on high shelves, and monitor movement in a senior’s home to detect if something might go wrong by analyzing their heart rates and detecting anomalies. AI could mow lawns, wash clothes, keep windows washed and even help with bathing and hygiene, technically making sure that the elderly are staying in a safe environment.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, I think AI is the key to the coming future as it is going to help in so many ways. Climate change, cyber-attacks, terrorism are all areas AI can help with. I think it is important for kids in this generation to learn about AI so that they can make the impossible happen. It will be great for children to learn about AI because it will be the future and if you don't believe me, then you should look at living proof, Japan.
