Top 3 Applications of AI in Industry from a Student of Washington-Liberty High School

There are infinite possibilities for artificial intelligence, but currently, as I’ve learned, some industries have a high demand for technological advancement and positive change.

AI in E-Commerce

Have you ever been on Instagram, and you see an ad for something you like a lot? Because I certainly have. I love online shopping and buying things like rings or earrings, but it still surprises me every time when ads for more jewelry keep popping up. And of course, I like what I see, so I keep buying more rings and earrings.

The reason those ads are so fit to each person they appear for is because of artificial intelligence. A computer program remembers and learns a person’s browser history, past purchases, and other social media activity. Then, the program creates personalized ads based on what it has learned about. Essentially, for those who can’t resist, it’s an endless cycle of online shopping.

Along with personalized ads, there is also artificial intelligence not to persuade you into something, but to protect you from being persuaded. Some programs are used to detect fake reviews on products and credit card fraud. These programs will warn you of potential suspicious activity, or just take action and make sure you don’t take into account fake reviews.

AI in Healthcare

AI in Healthcare is a revolutionary idea. While I was in the Inspirit AI program, one project I learned about was using a model to detect skin cancers in photos of skin. The model would learn pictures of skin that were already diagnosed as benign or malignant, and based on what it learned, would diagnose unlabeled pictures of skin.

AI FOR DRUG DISCOVERY

Aside from my own experiences, AI in Healthcare has changed people’s lives for the better. AI is used to discover new drugs and advance the process of curing diseases. With computer models, doctors and researchers can better understand the diseases they are fighting, and further, develop more sophisticated treatment methods.

An interesting development within AI and Healthcare is tracing COVID-19 and similar variants. With COVID-19 already being in our lives, we can still learn about how it got here. With AI, models can learn how COVID-19 spread globally, and from there, trace COVID-19 and prepare for similar situations.

AI in Automobiles

AI in Automobiles is one of the most talked about applications of AI. By now, everyone knows about self-driving cars. However, there is still so much to be discussed before self-driving cars are completely normalized. For one, how do they know what to do? There are a lot of different factors as to what the computer needs to learn in order to qualify as a safe and skilled driver.

For one, the computer has to recognize its surroundings. A model that solves this particular problem is one of the projects I studied in the Inspirit AI program. What the computer has to learn is what can be driven on, and what is considered an obstacle or a hazard. For instance, part of what the computer has to learn is what people, pets, bicycles, trees, fire hydrants, and more all look like. The computer has to be able to recognize these things in order to stop/drive around these obstacles, and essentially not kill or seriously injure anyone or anything.

Also, the computer has to learn traffic laws. Every student driver learns about traffic lights and different signs before getting behind the wheel, and likewise, self-driving cars have to learn those same rules. The consequences for not learning traffic laws and different surroundings could be disastrous, which is why the computers in self-driving cars essentially need to be perfected before they can be the car that everyone has.

What are future applications of AI?

Even though these three industries have a particular demand for AI technology, so do many industries. Whatever you’re passionate about, whether it’s art or music, or business and finance, AI will one day be a component of the industry, in order to continue advancing knowledge in all different aspects of life.
