Top 5 Science Internships for High Schoolers

Passionate about Biology? Wishing to grow some knowledge in Chemistry or Physics? Wanting to stand out in college apps? Or do you just want to do something interesting over the summer? If you said yes to any of the questions above, you should consider applying for a science internship.

Science internships are not only a good way to boost someone’s college applications, but it is a phenomenal way to network with others who have the same passion as you and grow as a scientist. Great! So where should you apply?

Let’s Begin…

  1. Science Internship Program (SIP)

The Science internship program is a prestigious program that is run by UCSC. Every year, there are numerous categories in science from Microbiology to AI where students can research their topic with a mentor assigned to them and get to network with other peers and their mentor. They can then submit this project to science fairs and publishings.

  2. John Hopkins Applied Physics Lab (ASPIRE) High School Mentoring Program

Aspire is an excellent program where high school juniors and seniors can explore their interest in STEM and network with many peers of the same interests. If you are interested in Physics, this might be the program for you!

  3. NASA High School Internships

NASA offers multiple high school internships in many categories such as AI and ML in Air Traffic management. It is very hard to get into this internship, however, it is a very good experience if you want to pursue a STEM career in the future. In order to qualify to apply for NASA, you should be at least 16 when the application process opens, a US Citizen, and have at least a 3.0 GPA.

  4. Princeton Plasma Physics Lab Summer Internship Program

If you have a large interest in Physics and really want to grow your knowledge in Physics, this is the place for you! Eligible to all seniors who have graduated and are above 16, this internship will give you a chance to complete computational projects in Physics. In order to apply to this program, you need a vast experience in coding and physics, chemistry, advanced math, and engineering.

  5. Summer Science Program in Astrophysics

Looking forward to learning astrophysics, scientific programming, and physics and math? This would be great for you then! Through this internship you will go more in depth in astrophysics and learn more about celestial coordinates and use python to calculate asteroid velocity and position vectors. These observations will be submitted to the Minor Planet Center to improve the predictions of an asteroid’s position.

Overall Science Internship programs are a great way to engage in the STEM field and do something you are passionate in!
