1. Duke Pre-College Programs

2. DukeREP (Research in Engineering Program)

Duke Research in Engineering Program (DukeREP) is a 7-week summer program hosted by the Biomedical Engineering Department (BME) for high school students with an interest in science and engineering. DukeREP’s mission is to increase diversity in STEM fields. The program introduces students from diverse backgrounds to scientific research in hopes of inspiring them to pursue academic and professional careers in STEM.

While priority is given to Durham Public School students, applications are accepted from all eligible high school students in North Carolina. Students from underrepresented groups in STEM or from economically disadvantaged backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply. Accommodations are unable to be provided for students outside of NC.

3. Outreach Design Education (ODE)

The Outreach Design Education Program (ODE) at Duke University is a set of programs that introduces younger students, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds, to engineering design and fosters an appreciation for STEM. Through engineering design, ODE promotes students’ STEM identity by empowering them to be the drivers of biomedical innovation.

The program’s focus on design, rather than conceptual or abstract learning exercises, gives students the practical skills to identify problems and develop solutions. With these skills, students can transform an idea from a far-off concept into a finished product. All programs are funded by the National Institute of Health. They are free for participants, and meals are provided. 

For instance, the ODE Summer Design Camp is an immersive biomedical engineering design experience. Over the course of five weeks, participants will learn about the engineering design process and use it to solve real-world problems through a series of design workshops, labs, and innovation sessions. This camp is a non-residential summer program for students from Durham and the RTP area. Students will come to Duke’s campus each day and head home at the end of the day’s activities.

4. Duke Summer STEM Academy

The Thomas Lord Department of Mechanical Engineering (MEMS) offers a 3-week summer intensive for high school students to establish a Tech Talent Pipeline for the Triangle.  This program is an immersive, hands-on experience that is centered in engineering design practice through active application of theory.

Students learn computer-aided drafting, advanced manufacturing techniques (3D printing, laser-cutting, microcontroller programming, electronics, and shop tools), project management, product design, technical communication through presentations and websites, and teamwork.

Rising juniors and seniors in high school are closely mentored by graduate students, faculty, and staff as they identify a problem of social importance and develop solutions in our advanced fabrication facilities and laboratories.

Students work in small groups, have lunchtime talks by our renowned faculty, present their designs and prototypes continuously, and prepare a digital portfolio.

5. Duke IGNITE Program

Duke Ignite is an engineering design experience for Durham/RTP-area middle and high school students that challenges students to work toward building solutions to problems in their communities. Ignite is a human-centered design education program established to promote creativity and problem-solving in future innovators. Middle and high school students are challenged to develop innovative solutions to problems that affect their local community, guided by the UN Sustainable Development Goals. College students are paired with middle and high school students to serve as trainers and mentors throughout the engineering design process.

6. Summer College for High School Students
