What is the Bank of America Student Leaders Program?

Founded in 2004, the Bank of America Student Leaders is an 8-week interactive summer program, including the week spent at the Student Leader Summit in Washington, DC. Every year, hundreds of community-minded high schoolers are accepted into the Bank of America Student Leaders program, connecting more than 300 high school juniors and seniors to service opportunities and skills training. They will receive firsthand experience serving their communities through paid eight-week internships with nonprofits like Boys and Girls Clubs of America and Habitat for Humanity. Additionally, they will experience firsthand how nonprofits, governments, and businesses collaborate to meet local needs by participating in the National Student Leaders Summit in Washington, D.C.

At the Student Leadership Summit (July 17-24), students will join their peers to build upon their leadership skills and study the importance of civic engagement and inclusion. They will engage in dialogue about social justice and poverty and visit the Holocaust Museum for a stimulating discussion on how lessons from history can help advance a more inclusive society. In addition to gaining perspective on the value of cross-sector partnerships and the power of mentoring, they will meet with their Congressional leadership and participate in a service learning project at the American Red Cross. The summit serves as a distinctive activity where students not only strengthen their peer networks but also have the opportunity to foster professional connections that can significantly propel their future career options.

In this section of the blog, we'll uncover the inspiring testimonials of a dynamic group of Bank of America student leaders based in Portland, Oregon. These motivated individuals have teamed up with the nonprofit Boys and Girls Clubs, channeling their efforts into meaningful projects that align seamlessly with their chosen career paths.

“While working at the Program Office, I was able to observe how the employees work individually, as well as collaborating with each other to better the organization. Their motivation and passion for what they do has really taught me to figure out what I am passionate about in life. I am starting college this fall, which I am excited and nervous about at the same time. Having this internship has motivated me to try new things when I begin college. I am really excited to join clubs, volunteer, and most of all apply to internships that might lead me to figuring out my passion.”

 — Hawi Hussen

“ Being a Bank of America intern at the Boys & Girls Club has been an incredible experience as we all have developed many new skills, built new relationships, and created memories that we will take with us. Personally, the most terrifying and useful experience I have gained experience in is the cold calling businesses. As a Business & Public Policy major, this will be extremely valuable for my future although I was shaking and laughing for a couple of minutes before each call.”

— Ana Parvankin

These young interns worked in various areas such as development, educational programs, marketing, and programming data. Within these departments, they undertook a range of projects, from researching academic success trends over time to revamping websites, crafting informative bulletin boards, inputting data into databases, and more.
